The Sacred

This is a sacred time. Sacred reflects specialness, that which is deeper than is obvious, the spiritual dimension of the physical, that which you value deeply.

This is a time of transition of seasons celebrated throughout history, a time to go within but also often a social time to gather with people and appreciate community, commonality, individuality, the birth of something new, letting go of the past.

What is sacred to you? Can you feel the life that is behind all reality, all objects and beings, the deeper level that animates everything?

Make a list of what is sacred to you. Get quiet enough to feel the sacred energy that is everywhere and see the beauty in each experience.
Stand in front of objects, nature, people and experience the love that is there.

Have a season of worship, appreciation, beauty, depth, presence, silence and spacious awareness of what is.

Gratitude

Gratitude is the cornerstone of spiritual growth. Many teachers say that if you focus on gratitude you will create a permanent state of enlightenment in no time. Many of us have experienced the positive energy shift that happens by focusing on what is working and what we are grateful for.

Each day, moment to moment, think about what is good in your life, who you are grateful for and put your attention on praise, appreciation, gratitude and thanks. Keep refocusing your awareness to that.

Call people and tell them what you appreciate, write notes or cards, keep your mind aware of beauty, support others, and pay attention to what is good. Think about and write gratitude lists (experiences, qualities, events, etc.) as much as you want.

See the value of difficult times with the rich learning that comes from growth. Help others, but not take control of others, in their process, and have compassion, patience and kindness in your actions - with a big pinch of acceptance for your humanness.

You are all 9 types

You are all 9 types

Even though you have a dominant type, we visit all the types as parts of ourselves and certainly through relating to other people and their types.

The more comfortable you are with the qualities of each type, your relationships will improve and you will have compassion for the difficult aspects of each type. Make a conscious effort to develop the higher traits of each type, as a way to balance your type.

If you need to develop your "8ness" pretend you are an 8 and be more direct, act on your body instinct more. Trust yourself. If you want to have more of a positive focus like a 7, change your thoughts toward what is good now and what you want in the future.

On the deepest level, our true self is beyond type. We each take on a type because it feels more comfortable and familiar, but practice being each of the types. Don't demand that the world should go along with your type preferences.

Practice being the honesty and high quality and improvement of the 1s, the attunement to others' needs like a 2, the goal and success focus of a 3, the creativity and emotional awareness of the 4, the objectivity and depth of information like a 5, the preparedness and back up plans and conscious cautiousness of a 6, and the inclusiveness, peace creation and acceptance of a 9.

Notice when you are too stuck within your own type and branch out! Herb Pearce

The Value of the Enneagram

I have found the Enneagram personality types system the most useful tool in my life. The Enneagram is a description of 9 unique ways of seeing and experiencing life. I've been teaching the Enneagram for 18 years and through this system, I am still constantly learning a lot about myself, understanding personality differences, developing the best traits of each type in myself, and relating well to each type (knowing their strengths and weaknesses). Each type is relatively predictable in their concerns, behaviors and communication styles. People make so much sense when you know this information. I've taught a few thousand Enneagram workshops and I am still amazed how useful and accurate it is.

In case you don't know the Enneagram here's a brief summary of the types, parts of which each of us have. One type, called the core type, is more automatic to the way you are (requires no effort to be that) and dominant in one's basic motivation, thinking process, perspective, filtering system, etc. There are typical behaviors in each type but behavior is less representative of type than why someone is doing what they are doing. The Types:

Type 1 - The Perfectionist/Reformer - avoids mistakes, imperfection
Type 2 - The Overhelper/Cheerleader - avoids their own needs
Type 3 - The Overachiever/Winner - avoids failure
Type 4 - The Depth Seeker/Romantic - avoids everyday, humdrum life
Type 5 - The Knowledge Seeker/Observer - avoids expression of personal feelings
Type 6 - The Security Questioner/Loyalist - avoids the insecure unknown
Type 7 - The Optimist/Fun Lover - avoids pain
Type 8 - The Director/Powerhouse - avoids vulnerability
Type 9 - Peacemaker/Accommodator - avoids conflict

I'm doing an advanced Enneagram workshop in Andover MA on Wed Oct 1 from 9:30-3:30 (very inexpensive) at a beautiful villa and an Enneagram Basic workshop on Fri Oct 10 evening and an advanced workshop the next day Sat from 2-6 in Arlington MA. Go to my website, www.herbpearce.com for more info or email me at herb@herbpearce.com. I'm happy to chat about the Enneagram. Send me any questions or comments.
